CASUAL CAPE: A SHORT HISTORY

Major Bean, commander of colonial troops, built the
home and a nearby barn in 1760 when Whittier Highway
was just a dirt road. Bean trained soldiers in the
woods and fields surrounding the house when the
colonies were fighting for independence. In one
exuberant parade, he rode his horse through the house,
leading his troops in celebration. Gunpowder stored
in the barn beams exploded one night and the barn
burned to the ground, nearly taking the house with it.
When the Major died, his wife and son turned it into
a tavern. With its reputation as training ground and
tavern, it's no wonder the dirt road became a major
thoroughfare. Eventually the Beans sold the house to
the Richardson family. Mae, pictured here, was born
and raised in the house and she has fond memories of
living here. She's one of several visitors pleased to
see the restoration work and the care that the
Poitras' have taken in bringing back the flavor of its
colorful past. Now home to Casual Cape, it is a must
